GoCityHotels Accepts Bitcoin, Convinced by /r/Bitcoin
One of the primary jobs bitcoin activists have is to spread awareness of digital currencies. They get a warm and fuzzy feeling whenever their voices are heard, and are able to influence a business to start welcoming bitcoin. The power of the /r/Bitcoin community was enough to persuade GoCityHotels.com of the benefits bitcoin can bring to the world.
GoCityHotels
A bitcoiner by the name of ButterflySammy took to the /r/Bitcoin forum on reddit to get help in booking his holiday getaway using bitcoin. Eventually, the bitcoin enthusiast got a hold of the owner of GoCityHotels, and spoke to him about bitcoin. The owner, Nick, became interested in the digital currency, and made a deal with the eager bitcoiner.
The deal was that if 10 different people requested to use bitcoin on the hotel’s website, then GoCityHotels would start accepting bitcoins. With the power of the internet spreading the news like wild-fire, more than 200 requests from around the world began popping up. It was due to Sammy’s reddit post that prompted /r/Bitcoin’s sudden response in just a 24-hour time frame.
Still waiting for a reply from hotel officials, Nick took to reddit anyway to answer questions from bitcoiner’s.
The London-based hotel service has expanded its business to over 20,000 hotels, and has more than 15 years in the game. Now with the acceptance of bitcoin payments, the company may be looking into creating their own digital wallet APIs, without the assistance of a third party payment processor.
Las Vegas Hotel Takes BTC
Speaking of hotels, though casinos in Las Vegas won’t let you gamble in bitcoin, at least not yet, you can still rent a room for a few nights with them. The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and Golden Hotel & Casino, were the firsts to announce that they would be accepting the famed digital currency back in January.
However, state regulations will prevent bitcoin from being used on the blackjack table, the slots, and all other casino games.
Co-owner and CEO of the D and Golden Gate hotels, Derek Stevens says that with the help of bitcoin:
“I’m hoping the early adopter element provides us an opportunity to meet what I consider to be an interesting and intelligent demographic.”
Bitcoin may one day find itself on the gambling scene, but for now, it can be used for checking into rooms, which lead to casinos.
