Doge Vault Releases Update on the Hacking Disaster
On May 11, 2014 hackers had attacked Dogevault.com, an online Dogecoin wallet provider. As a result of the hacking, Doge Vault went offline in order to protect itself and its customers. The online Dogecoin wallet provider has just released an updated announcement on its website detailing the results of the hacking investigation. It reads,
“After salvaging our wallet we have ascertained that around 280 million Dogecoins were taken in the attack, out of a total balance of 400 million kept in our hot wallet.”
120 million dogecoins have been recovered since the hacking and have been transferred to another address under Doge Vault’s control.
Doge Vault Hacking Investigation Results
It was explained in the announcement that a hacker was able to gain access to a node on which the Doge Vault’s digital machines were stored. This gave the attacker complete access to the Doge Vault systems. The online Dogecoin provider explains that its database, which contains user information and passwords, has also potentially been compromised.
Private keys for addresses have also been “presumed compromised.” Doge Vault warns users not to transfer any funds to Doge Vault addresses until the issue has been resolved. Even with all of this, the online Dogecoin wallet provider writes that it,
“will make every effort to refund all recovered Dogecoins to users. More information on this will be released along with further information on the attack after we have completed our investigation.”
Inquiries can be made to [email protected]. Currently, Doge Vault requests users to not submit any claims for the dogecoins that were recovered. It also recommends MultiDoge, a light client Dogecoin wallet, for users looking for a secure and easy to use Dogecoin client.
