TigerDirect becomes first major Canadian online retailer to accept Bitcoins, is using BitPay to process payments
TigerDirect has extended the Bitcoin payment option to its Canadian customers also, according to a press release sent out on Monday. Customers will now be able to choose Bitcoin as a method of payment when purchasing any of the 300,000+ products available for sale on TigerDirect.ca.
To process the payments, TigerDirect is working with Bitcoin payment service provider BitPay.
The move to Canada came after TigerDirect saw success with BitPay’s Bitcoin payment platform on their US site.
“We are very pleased with our BitPay implementation on TigerDirect.com and are excited to roll it out across our other sites,” said Steven Leeds, director of marketing for TigerDirect.
TigerDirect reportedly chose BitPay after “months of research into Bitcoin payment processors,” because “BitPay is focused on offering tools and features merchants like TigerDirect need to make it easy to adopt Bitcoin.”
The retailer also took advantage of BitPay’s Bitcoin mining knowledge and capabilities by incorporating purchasable mining equipment into their inventory.
“TigerDirect has taken an interest in Bitcoin not only as a payment option but also a new product line through the sale of Bitcoin mining equipment,” said Paige Freeman, vice president of sales at BitPay. “It is great to be working with an organization who is as just enthusiastic about Bitcoin as we are.”
BitPay has been widely successful over the past number of years in bridging the gap between customers and merchants in the realm of Bitcoin. BitPay handles Bitcoin payments for a number of major merchants, including Zynga, Virgin Galactic, WordPress and Shopify, along with more than 30,000 others.
In addition to rolling out the Bitcoin payment option for their Canadian website, TigerDirect have also implemented the option for their mobile/tablet sites.
