People Traveling to Iron Rail Diner to Pay via Dogecoin

A restaurant in Mount Savage, Maryland called the Iron Rail Diner is currently the only one in the area that accepts Dogecoin. It started accepting the digital currency on Apirl 4, 2014. Terry Linn II, the Iron Rail’s co-owner, says that many Dogecoin miners have come to his restaurant to spend Dogecoins.

Dogecoin Usage in Iron Rail Diner

Linn II said about Dogecoin,

“The way I feel is that for us, it’s the same as a credit card but it eliminates a lot of the fees. I feel they will be valuable in a couple of years down the road.”

Dogecoin is a digital currency that stemmed from being a parody of Bitcoin. The coin features a Shiba Inu on its logo.

A cryptocurrency miner named Tym Holwager drove by the Diner and saw that Dogecoins were accepted as payment. So, he did what any other Samaritan would do: he took a picture of the Dogecoin accepted sign and posted it on Reddit. Since then the post went viral, and the restaurant saw its first Dogecoin customers.

Jared Gorby, a resident in West Virginia, saw the Reddit post and traveled to the Iron Rail Diner to make an in-person purchase with Dogecoin. This was the first Dogecoin payment the restaurant received. Gorby said,

“Before this, I had only ever spent Dogecoins online to purchase fine-grade sea salts, as well as commemorative copper and silver minted Dogecoins, so this was the first opportunity I had to spend the coins in person

According to Linn II, in order to buy food from the Diner, a person has to simply scan the QR code with a smartphone to transfer the Dogecoin from wallet to wallet. Tym Holwager explained how cryptocurrency mining worked,

“Mining cryptocurrency, in laymen’s terms, involves making your computer solve math problems. When a problem is solved, the computer that solved the problem is rewarded a certain amount of the currency (25 Bitcoins, 50 Litecoins and 250,000 Dogecoins, currently).So, the more powerful your computer is the more chance your computer will solve a math problem faster than all the other computers working on the problem.”

Gorby said that the Dogecoin community is very “the friendliest, most sincere place” he’s found on the internet. He plans to come back to the Iron Rail Diner with a few friends.
