Coinbase Apps and BitHack Hackathon Winners Announced
Coinbase Apps
Digital wallet Coinbase has announced the creation of their new app store, which will specifically tend to the needs of the bitcoin community. The store will be built off of the Coinbase platform and API’s.
Coinbase developers have introduced the app marketplace to continue on with their user friendly philosophy. The company’s API has already been used to create thousands of apps and projects.
In addition, Coinbase’s Android application has been built through their own API.
Apps such as Pounce, which allows users to make orders from favorable brands with just two taps, show what can come out of the Coinbase API. Coinbase welcomes developers to create and submit their applications to the Coinbase app store.
Coinbase Bithack Winners
Coinbase held an online competition known as the Bithack Hackathon, to encourage the creation of bitcoin apps with the company’s API. Although there were thousands of entires, the company narrowed it down to 3 Bithack winners.
Third prize went to the Coinery.io app. The app simplifies the sale of digital products online by accepting bitcoin. No fees are added and products are delivered instantly. A user uploads their product with a brief description and Coinery takes it from there. The creator of Coinery, Zach Ferland, earned a $3,000 prize for his app.
The second place winners were Didier Hilhorst and Raphael Schaad for Aircoin. The duo got to split the $5,000 prize by developing a quicker way to send bitcoins to a nearby person. The free to download app claims that sending bitcoins is now faster than sending photos.
The $10,000 grand prize went to Zach Alam, who came in first for his Coinplanter app. This app allows users to share, store or hide bitcoins based on location. The app is somewhat of a scavenger hunt, as users can go looking for bitcoins hidden by other users.
In a competitive environment such as the Bithack Hackathon, not everyone’s great idea will make it. For the runner ups, Coinbase says:
“We were very impressed by the level of innovation we saw in the applications. We’d like to make a special mention for the following apps: Bitfluence, Coinbasis, Coin Grab and Leaven. In the coming weeks, we’ll be showcasing the best apps in Coinbase Apps, our own app store for apps built using Coinbase platform and APIs.”
Coinbase and the thousands of app developers who entered have shown the innovative possibilities of bitcoin’s evolution.
