Andreas Antonopoulos Raised Over 47 Bitcoins For Dorian Nakamoto
Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto is the man who Newsweek claimed to be Bitcoin’s elusive founder. However, Dorian Nakamoto denied any involvement with Bitcoin and called Newsweek’s report false.
Andreas Antonopoulos Fundraiser for Dorian
Whether or not Dorian Nakamoto is Satoshi, doesn’t exactly matter in this case. Andreas Antonopoulos set up a donation fund for Dorian last month in order to cover his legal fees and to help the man out. On Reddit, Andreas Antonopolous wrote,
“If this person is Satoshi, then the funds are a small ‘thanks’ and won’t make much of a difference. These funds will serve as a ‘sorry for what happened to you’, help with medical bills his family is facing, any legal bills they may incur, or anything else.”
The fundraiser ends today, and Dorian Nakamoto will be receiving his donation in cash. If he does not wish to take the donations, Nakamoto can give them to a charity of his choice. However, if he does not wish to do even that, Andreas Antonopoulus wrote that the donation will go to EFF (the Electronic Frontier Foundation).
Over 47 Bitcoins raised for Dorian
As a result of setting up the fundraiser, 47.5 bitcoins (approximately over $22,000) have been collected for Dorian Nakamoto. These bitcoins will be cashed out to Nakamoto in US dollars. The good thing about having a Bitcoin donation fund is that all the transactions were recorded in the blockchain which makes it easy to verify them.
In an email to a Forbes reporter, Andreas Antonopoulos wrote,
“I will be completing the pledged delivery of funds at some point in April. The exact details will remain confidential to protect the privacy of Mr. Dorian Nakamoto. For security reasons, I plan to meet in person to ensure that I am delivering the funds to the right person, as pledged during the fundraiser.”
It is definitely a good idea to meet the man in person as it would ensure the Bitcoin community that their donations are going to the right guy. Antonopoulos continued,
“I have been impressed by the generosity of the community and I hope that these funds will somewhat compensate for the egregious violation of his privacy due to the irresponsible and poorly researched article by Newsweek, a tabloid rag serving to demonstrate the sad decline of serious journalism in this country.”
It is amazing to see the Bitcoin community join together in order to support a man who may not even be Bitcoin’s founder. It demonstrates the generosity of the Bitcoin community.
