Bitcoin Politics: Two Candidates Accept BTC in Maine
Bitcoin politics may sound like an oxymoron since Bitcoin is a decentralized form of currency with no governmental involvement. However, politicians in the U.S may prove that if used wisely, Bitcoin can benefit any political campaign.
In the 23rd state of America, Maine, two political candidates announced that their campaigns have decided to step aboard the Bitcoin bandwagon and start accepting bitcoins. Republican Eric Brakey, and independent Belfast conservative Blaine Richardson, are running to stand for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.
Brakey tweeted his first Bitcoin contribution which was worth around $91 at the time. Since his campaign started accepting the digital currency, Brakey was able to make a few hundred dollars in Bitcoin. However, Richardson was not so lucky. His campaign only received 0.13 BTC so far.
The Buzz of Bitcoin Politics
Even though both candidates haven’t received as many coins as one might think, they are pleased with their decision in accepting Bitcoin. This is because,
“It’s attracted a lot of young people who are digitally savvy, and it’s just a constituency that Bitcoin is attractive to,”
Brakey said. In addition, Richardson’s campaign sees Bitcoin as creating a buzz for the candidate which makes him more popular and relatable to the public.Richardson’s campaign manager, Mathew McDonald said about Bitcoin,
“It’s cutting-edge. Our campaign’s experimenting with technology and avenues that no campaign in Maine’s history has ever dealt with.”
Knowing this, one might think publicity is all these candidates want.
Don’t Hold on Forever!
Due to the fact that Bitcoin’s value decreases and increases as days go by, one might wonder what the candidates have to say about this. Brakey hasn’t decided how long his campaign will hold on to the coins before changing them into USD. However, it seems he will not be holding on to the coins forever.
McDonald, Richardson’s campaign manager, and Brakey, claims to have small quantities of bitcoins themselves. Whether this is for investment purposes or speculation, we don’t know.
Only time will tell whether or not Brakey and Richardson’s decision in accepting bitcoins garners them more support.
Bitcoin Politics…things have just started getting more interesting.
